In every great leader’s story, there’s a turning point - a moment that redefines what leadership truly means.

For Dr. Mark Hartley, that moment came early in his career when he realized that leadership isn’t about holding power - it’s about holding space for others.

Now the Dean of Student Development at Coconino Community College in Flagstaff, Arizona, Dr. Hartley brings more than 25 years of higher education experience to his work, inspiring others to lead with authenticity, faith, and joy. He’ll be joining us as a featured speaker at the upcoming Elevate Leaders Conference: Leading with Purpose, Innovation, and Impact, where he’ll share his insights on resilience, connection, and purpose-driven leadership.

From Inspiration to Impact

“I was inspired by the power of education to transform lives — including my own,” Hartley reflects. “Mentors and coaches changed my direction with a single act of belief. That stuck with me. I wanted to be that kind of leader — someone who helps others find their voice and realize their story still has more chapters to be written.”

That commitment to transformation has defined his leadership journey. Whether in the classroom, on campus, or on stage, Dr. Hartley leads with empathy and authenticity; all qualities he describes in three words: Empathetic. Transformational. Fun.

Redefining Leadership Through Connection

Hartley’s leadership philosophy was shaped by a powerful lesson early on: students and colleagues don’t just need information; they need connection.

During a difficult season in his life, a mentor reminded him that he wasn’t a victim, but a victor. “That experience taught me that strong leaders don’t have to have all the answers - they just have to show up authentically and lead with heart.”

His message is simple but deeply resonant: vulnerability isn’t weakness; it’s a leadership superpower.

Faith, Fitness, and Reflection: The Foundation of Growth

When asked how he stays grounded and inspired, Dr. Hartley points to three pillars: faith, fitness, and reflection.
“I start my days in prayer and gratitude. I make time to move - whether it’s a workout, a walk, or a quiet moment in nature. Staying grounded means remembering why I do this work: to serve, to lift others, and to make a lasting impact.”

He believes that true leadership begins with self-awareness. Leading yourself before leading others. And in a world of constant change and burnout, his advice rings clear: “Leaders don’t follow titles - they follow trust.”

Balancing Strength and Humanity

Today’s leaders, Hartley says, face immense pressure to appear unshakable. But real strength lies in being human. “The antidote is authenticity - giving ourselves permission to be imperfect. When we model vulnerability and balance, we remind others it’s okay to pause, reflect, and lead from a place of wholeness instead of exhaustion.”

It’s this blend of grace and grit that makes Dr. Hartley’s leadership style so refreshing - and his sessions so impactful.

Beyond the Podium

Outside of his professional life, Dr. Hartley finds joy in creating and connecting. Whether that’s designing motivational merchandise, writing books, or spending time with his daughter and loved ones. “Laughter and connection recharge my soul,” he says.

Before every big event, he takes a deep breath, says a prayer, and reminds himself: “It’s not about perfection — it’s about connection.”

And in that, he captures the essence of what Elevate Leaders stands for.

Looking Ahead with Purpose

As Dr. Hartley looks toward the future, his mission is clear: to help others rediscover their grit and grace. Through his MercyWins brand and his continued speaking and writing, he’s empowering others to lead with purpose and resilience - no matter the season they’re in.

“I’m excited to connect with other purpose-driven leaders who believe in elevating others, not just their titles,” Hartley says of the upcoming Elevate Leaders Conference. “These events create space for real conversations - the kind that ignite change and remind us why we do what we do.”
